What was the biggest challenge you faced in your first six months in business? How did you meet that challenge?

The biggest challenge we have is in getting our customers to realize what an amazing product we have. I think when they hear we make custom hand-painted oil paintings at an affordable price they think it’s some kind of a trick. When they see a picture, they think there’s no possible way their order could turn out like our sample. That’s why for us it’s really important to get our paintings out there and into the hands of potential clients…so they can really see how great the quality is.

What would you say is the one thing that new business owners forget about or overlook when they’re just planning/starting out?

What I have found is that people who are starting businesses―especially out of their own homes―do not give themselves a specific set of hours out of their day to dedicate to work, and they can easily get distracted. I always say that you need to treat your business like a business, and by this I mean you must treat your business like you are working in an office building all day. Just because you can set you own hours does not mean you can dedicate an hour here and thirty minutes there―not if you expect to accomplish much. The people I know who have found success are those who say, “Okay, I am going to work from ten to five, five days a week.” We need that sort of schedule to keep us from getting distracted!

What marketing strategies have you found to be most successful in growing your business?

For us it’s all about getting these oil paintings into people’s hands, giving them the opportunity to see firsthand what it is we really can do. Once they realize we are the real deal, the art sells itself.

What is it about the business/industry you are in that made it so attractive to you?
