Facebook's Updated Nearby Feature Helps Small Businesses Create Buzz

Announced just last week, Facebook’s newly updated Nearby feature, which can be found in its app for both iOS and Android, makes it easier than ever before for prospective customers—roughly 600 million of them in fact—to find you if you're a small business owner. That’s how many monthly active mobile users are on Facebook.

Needless to say, if you don’t already have a Facebook Page for your retail business opportunity, franchise or other small business, then now is the time. And if you do, it’s never been more important to keep it updated and relevant.

How Nearby Works

The new Nearby allows users to find local businesses with the help of their Facebook friends, and it becomes more personalized over time as they all rate, like, recommend and share more and more places that they frequent and enjoy. One simple touch of a button on a category of choice, and your potential customers and clients will know what you offer, where you are, your hours of operation and how good what it is your selling really is, according to the opinions of those they trust most.

In turn, your customers will use Nearby to rate and recommend you, your products and services to others, so keeping your Page current is a must. Facebook relies solely on its own data and only shows Pages that are already in its database, so if you’re not there, you’re missing out on a potentially tremendous marketing opportunity.

While it is currently somewhat buried in the sidebar navigation, predictions are that Nearby will evolve considerably over time. “This is an early release and there’s lots more to do,” Facebook said in its Newsroom post regarding the new release last week. “Results will get better the more people use Nearby, and we’ll continue to improve it based on feedback. We also plan to add places info from third party services in the near future.”
