A Judgment Recovery Business is Hot and in Demand! Have you ever watched Judge Judy or any of those court TV shows where landlords sue tenants for past-due rent, pet groomers sue pet owners for unpaid services, and brothers sue sisters for stolen allowances? Judge Judy slams down her gavel and barks orders at the defendant to pay up, but here’s a little known fact: the court does not enforce that judgment. And that goes for non-televised court cases too.

That’s right, just because a judge orders someone to pay doesn’t mean that person is going to do it. Imagine if someone owed you a few thousand dollars and decided not to pay you, regardless of what the court ordered. Would you know what to do? Most people don’t, so they wait in frustration for payment that never arrives.

My name is Christina Smiley, and I’m the founder of Sierra Judgment Recovery. I learned about unpaid judgments many years ago. At that time there was virtually no one who provided this type of service. I learned that once people had been awarded these judgments 80% of them were never collected. My opportunity-seeking radar kicked into high gear and I immediately saw a way to earn money while helping people at the same time.

This discovery couldn’t have come at a better time; back then I was part owner of a carpet store and had amassed a large amount of debt. I had three small children and thought that by owning a store I’d have more money and time for my family. Initially it was an exciting time for me, and I stayed optimistic for the first six months. But that dream quickly turned into a nightmare of debt and endless hours of work. In reality I was chained to a retail prison. I accumulated monstrous debt, got a second mortgage when I couldn’t afford the first one, and all of my credit cards were maxed to the limit. I was truly only a few paychecks away from being homeless.

That’s when I learned about the vast amount of opportunity available at my local courthouse. When the carpet business started winding down, I focused on learning how to collect these unpaid judgments. It was trial and error for at least six months. I buried my nose in statutes and codes and drove myself just about nuts.

Then I contacted judgment holders in my area to see if they could use my help collecting, and as it turned out, there was plenty of work for me. In most cases, they had filed away their judgments a few years prior with no hope of ever collecting them. My business, Sierra Judgment Recovery, gets that money back. These people figured they’d never see any of that money again. They were overjoyed to assign all of their judgments and were more than willing to let me keep 50% of what I collected.

Another attractive aspect of this service is there’s no up-front cost to the judgment holder. Any filing fees or costs I incur are reimbursed to me out of the judgment once it’s collected. The judgment holder doesn’t have to pay anything up front.

This is primarily behind-the-scenes work which makes it a non-confrontational business. I do everything through the court system; from seizing bank accounts and garnishing wages to placing liens on property and more. If you choose not to, you never even have to contact the debtor. And the most important aspect is I’ve got more time for family, friends and whatever I want to do.

I’m really fortunate now. I live in an upscale neighborhood of people who are all extremely curious about what I do that enables me to stay home. Not bad for someone that was in debt up to my eyeballs just a few short years ago.

But the story doesn’t end here. I want to share my knowledge of this business with others across the country. In 1997 I put together a judgment recovery training course. I’ve been perfecting it ever since. The home-study program teaches how to contact judgment holders to get their business, the steps to tracking down a debtor and sorting through the paperwork from the court. In addition, students have access to unlimited support, a National Member Network, and a member discussion forum, which can be extremely helpful in cases where the debtor has relocated or just as a means to communicate with others in the business.

My motivation for sharing this business with others isn’t to get money from sales of the course (a one-time fee of $185.00); I want to continue developing the national network. I live in an area where people are constantly coming and going. They’re from all over the country, which makes it challenging to track them down. There are so few recovery services out there. It’s so much easier to contact someone in another state who can help rather than trying to figure out each state’s policies on your own.
